My Favorite Hike

A lot of people have asked “What’s your favorite hike?” This is a tough question! I’ve covered lots of incredible trails, so narrowing it down to just one seems impossible…almost…

There is one place that I keep going back to, and I keep recommending. I LOVE the hike to and from the Lower Falls of Whiteoak Canyon in Shenandoah National Park. Here’s why:

1) The trail follows a stream the whole way.

2) The grade isn’t very steep, so almost anyone can do it.

3) The trail is well-maintained.

4) There are two swimming holes.

5) There are two waterfalls.

6) There is a small natural waterside.

7) There are huge boulders — nice for picnics.

8) It’s a 4-mile out and back hike — a great distance for families.

9) No cell phone signal!

10) Awesome spot for photos.

If you’re interested in checking out this trail, I’d highly recommend you start from the BOTTOM of the mountain at the Boundary Parking Lot Trailhead. There is also a place to start from the top of the mountain from Skyline Drive, but that’s a more challenging hike and not necessarily family friendly (depending on ages).

NOTE: This trail can get crowded on the weekends so if you go on a Saturday or Sunday you may want to get there early! Even better…check it out during the week 🙂 ALSO NOTE: You will NOT have a cell phone signal past Sperryville, so please screen shot directions.

Directions to Whiteoak Canyon Boundary Trailhead:

From Sperryville, VA, follow Route 211 to Route 522 South for .8 mile. Turn right on Route 231, follow 10.2 miles to Etlan, turn right on Route 643. Follow for 4.5 miles and turn right onto Route 600 and proceed 3.5 miles to the parking area.
